News: PIKT project journey update
Overview of the PIKT project:
The Professional Identity for Khmer Teachers (PIKT) research study is currently investigating how teachers in Cambodia can be enabled to improve their teaching practice. The research focuses on the tasks and challenges of building teacher professional identity; how teachers see themselves and how this may change over time.

The project aims:
- Establish a Framework for Teacher Professional Identity.
- Develop methodology for investigating teaching practice in Cambodian schools.
- Design an evidence-based Teacher Professional Identity module.
Outline of the PIKT Journey.
2021:
- In 2021, the Professional Identity for Khmer Teachers (PIKT) project research application grant was submitted to the Irish Research Council.
2022:
- In 2022, Professor Casey received confirmation the project was awarded funding under the Department of Foreign Affairs ‘Better World’ strand of the COALESCE programme.
- In September 2022 , the first Research Advisory Board Meeting was held online and included representatives from each of the Collaborating Partners.
- In October 2022, Professor Leo Casey, alongside Pov Pheung, and Sreyphet Phan delivered at the PIKT workshop at the CARN Conference 2022.
2023:
- In January 2023, the three data collection instruments were signed-off at by the collaborating partners at the Battambang Provincial Office of Education in Cambodia.
- In February 2023, the field researchers began gathering the first round of field data.
- In June 2023, PIKT Partners and 25 participant teachers from schools in Battambang gathered for the first Teacher Professional Identity workshop.
- In September 2023, the field researcher team began preparing for the next round of data gathering within the PIKT project.
Next steps:
- Early 2024, the second round of field data will be collected in.
- Early 2024, the second Teacher Professional Identity workshop will be delivered.
